Maybe you are like me, and when you were 10, you routinely read your parents’ copy of Reader’s Digest. My favorite page was “Quotable Quotes.” Perhaps this is where I got my inspiration to start a chapbook of quotes and words of wisdom to help guide me to best overcome the adversity of life with grace and determination.
One of my favorites by Rumi, 13th century Sufi enlightened poet, Islamic jurist, and theologian:
Be With Those Who Help Your Being
Be with those who help your being. Don’t sit with indifferent people, whose breath comes cold out of their mouths. Not these visible forms, your work is deeper.
A chunk of dirt thrown in the air breaks to pieces.
If you don’t try to fly,
and so break yourself apart,
you will be broken open by death,
when it’s too late for all you could become.
Leaves get yellow. The tree puts out fresh roots
and makes them green.
Why are you
so content with a love that turns you yellow?
“Be with those who help your being” is advice I am trying to give to my beloved daughter who has just entered middle school. Navigating the mean-girls of the world today is just plain tough. My wish for her, my other two children, and all children is to learn the lesson it took me years to apply and what I advised my 4th and 5th graders when I taught in school. My sentiment was/is this: if someone makes you feel bad, runaway from them screaming; be with those who help your being. Life is just too dang short to do otherwise.
As for me, I enjoy being with those who help my frugal and sustainable being. Who are those who help your being?
To your social, emotional, and financial health!

Some time ago I was going through some difficult times, and was really worried about how my friends would react.Someone far wiser than me gave me these words of wisdom.
Those that mind don’t matter and those that matter don’t mind
It has really helped me to get through life’s everyday challenges, big and small
Get rid of those toxic relationships, those people who suck the air out of the room just by entering
There’s that old saying ” Treat people the way you would like to be treated” I prefer to treat people the way THEY would like to be treated Every one has different wants, needs and desires, they may be the same as yours and maybe not
