Take Notice: Stop & Shop’s $10 Catalina on Gift Cards–Spotted a Disappointing Glitch

Current Stop & Shop fruitbowl logo, shared wit...

One more annoying move by Stop & Shop. They know how to put a damper on an otherwise great promotion. Too bad… (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Stop & Shop disappoints shoppers…again.

Fair warning — I just came from Stop & Shop in Shelton, CT, and lo-and-behold, they have a disclaimer sign up on the gift card racks that say that gas cards are not included in this “buy $50 of gift cards, get $10 Catalina” promotion. I heard an elderly couple cursing the store when they read that sign! On the way home I was writing in my head a somewhat nasty post about this, but since I’m more of a diplomat…I just want to tell shoppers to make sure the gift cards you are buying at Stop & Shop are included in the promotion! I am unsure if this affects all stores, but I am guessing that it probably does.

I just want to say to the powers at Stop & Shop to stop relying on enticing customers into the store solely on its gas points. Sorry, Stop & Shop, sometimes ShopRite’s prices are so much better, the gas points don’t matter.

I very rarely go to Stop & Shop (S&S) anymore. I don’t even earn enough gas points (100) to get at least 10 cents off per gas gallon. I shop at Aldi now and don’t need any gimmicks or coupons to save 50% off my grocery bill. It has changed my life. For some Italian specialties I go to Shop Rite, and their can-can sale twice per year and stock up. I get my meats from a local market (local chickens and fresh turkey sausage, only). I only eat beef a few times per year, if at all.
It’s perfectly fine for S&S to know why I don’t go there anymore: TOO EXPENSIVE!

The closest Aldi’s to me is in Milford. I HAVE to plan a trip there to see what it’s all about. I hear good and bad things about it–can’t wait to see for myself! ~Marilyn

Aldi is based on European shopping. They carefully calculated that if they stock their floors direct from trucks keeping food in crates they only need 1 employee vs 11. Do you know what a savings that is? Also, cashiers do not pack groceries nor do they provide bags. You bring your own bag and pack yourself. (they provide a counter) That makes for a speedy check out (and only 1 or 2 cashier payroll). Only take cash or debt cards but no fee if you want cash back. Also .25 cents for a cart but you get it back when you return it, no employee needed for that. result? better paid employees with benefits and 50% less on groceries. Aldi carries their own brands of everything but not as much choice. For example: there is only 1 type of flour, sugar or eggs. But a dozen eggs (farm fresh & delish) is only $1.10 a dozen vs $4 at other grocery stores. Gallons of milk under $3, and yes they have many healthy choices plus their own line (Fit & Tasty) lower calorie product. Butter is only $1.99 a pound!
My only advice is to sit and read the ingredients. As in all processed foods, ingredients must be watched. But I love their salad pacs, fresh spinach, fresh fruits and veggies, German dark chocolates, yogurts, their cheeses are amazing! Take your time. Look over everything. The stores are also smaller (saves rent, heat, etc. expenses).
It took us a while to get used to them and find our way. Now, I am so thankful for this store. Hubby loves them. Frozen chicken tenders and breasts are v convenient and priced reasonably. I adore their plain, Angus frozen beef patties. It’s about the only beef I’ll ever eat. Frozen, wild caught salmon is good too!
Aldi owner is the brother of Trader Joe’s.
I go once a week. It’s a bit of a drive. I bring my cooler. Keep us posted.
PS The staff is wonderful also. I’ve made good friends there! Who knew?

Off with their heads Throw them in the Tower of London
Even with the gas points ( and mine are minimal anyway) my local gas station is cheaper, and they pump my gas, which I HATE doing Maybe the program is not going so well as I notice the cashiers always point them out now, which thet didn’t use to
However, since there are a lot of cards to choose from I got a couple for various occasions coming up (at Shoprite)
I buy a lot of things from Amazon, so got one to use with them
